Season 2010 Dolphins, Dolphins, Dolphins We saw more dolphins last season than ever before. We were even lucky enough to have a pod of 6 follow us all the way to one of our dive sites-yellow grass, where regular divers Barry & Jason Holt managed to catch them on video. Eagle Rays To our disbelief, amongst a shoal of damsel fish in the distance a huge Eagle Ray was spotted! It was highly disappointing that our 2 advanced open water diver students did not see it, but then just a few days later they were lucky enough to come face to face with one at Catel Island Caves. This species had never been seen in our area before. Within this week we had a total of 4 Eagle Ray sightings. While leading a normal dive at Yellow Grass PADI divemaster and Turkish dive guide Cigdem came across a pattern in the sand, and when she looked more closely she found a 3 metre Butterfly Ray buried beneath the sand. Luckily for our divers the ray must have awoke from its sleep and gave them a full view of this beautiful creature, by taking off and gliding to the depths. Divemaster Interns Divemaster interns Dan and Ali had their biggest challenge of the whole course during a staff BBQ at Catel Island beach one peak summer evening-having to drink wearing a mask and snorkel-nasty! This was after their 100th dive, where they had to dive naked!
Season 2009 Loggerhead Turtle Dive Master Cigdem Pirim lead a group of divers lucky enough to descend onto a huge Loggerhead Turtle at Catel Island Caves! We're on TV again Ryan makes his TV debut (in his best Turkish) as he is interviewed by television program on his favourite diving site-Catel Island Caves. Aquanaut are on the TV again, but this time it will broadcast on the BBC in the coming months-watch this space. We were lucky enough to be approached by the BBC as they wanted to make a program on the forbidden diving area of Yas Ada (Flat Island). The BBC crew were very excited about seeing the many ancient amphora's and the 60 m cargo ship that sunk after hitting the island in the early 80's. Divemaster Interns Congratulations to our 2009 PADI Dive masters Ezgi Kiris, Jo Richardson AKA Rod Kimble, and Cigdem Pirim :)
Season 2008 Island Clean October Aquanaut Diving along with the town council arranged for a day of cleaning at Catel Island. First we dived 500 meters from the beach and picked up rubbish from the sea bed, then we moved our attention to the Island itself which is a amazing relaxation point for daily holiday makers. You can see the amount of rubbish that was gathered that day behind us in the tractor trailer. We even picked up a fridge that had been dumped from a boat. It is shocking to see the lack of respect that some people have for our beautiful sea. A very special thanks to all of the Aquanaut staff, friends and of course the town council that took part in the clean up :)
July 14th - Our first real close up of dolphins. Three adult dolphins came to play around the boat as we were cruising along. Sorry it's not the greatest picture but I was too excited and I nearly dropped the new camera in the sea.
Mediterranean Monk Seals make regular appearances to the Boat We were visited 4 times by Seals last season while collecting guests and cruising to our dive sites. The highly protected and endangered species popped up beside the boat to check us out, once with a baby along side. A truly magnificent site to see an endangered species with your own eyes! In the excitement a staff member managed to flick the on switch to the compressor, which unfortunately scared the the beautiful creature to retreat under the waves.
Diving with a Butterfly Sting Ray and Turtle on last day of the season Guests were very lucky to come into contact with 2 rare sightings in 1 day-especially a turtle.
Season 2007
Aqua-newsMay 2007- Local dive site keme had daily sting ray sightings in a variety of species through out may. August 2007 - We saw our first two sea horses, one yellow, one brown. A word of advise you need to have a keen eye to spot them September 2007- A new species of nudi branch made an appearance, beautiful! October 2007-Just as waters were about to turn a bit colder the most beautiful jelly fish passed by.
Recent Media Coverage of Aquanaut Diving
Canal D- Turkish news, September 2007 As we eagerly await the opening of our local ship wreck that went down in the 1980s at Yassa island (Mira m a 30 metre cargo ship), the news team of Canal D thought it was a good time to advertise the benefits of opening this amazing wreck. The controversy about opening the site all stems from not the wreck itself, but the hundreds of amphorae's (ancient pottery) surrounding it from the 14 ship wrecks. Although nothing remains of these ship wrecks today, the pottery left around the most recent ship does add even more excitement to this already fantastic dive.
